Sometime in the not too distant future, boxing has been banned and replaced by the fighting game with robots. Robots are great. Giant, rock 'em, sock 'em mechanical robots. But if the sophisticated machinery, Steel concrete sticks to the ancient style of story-telling, with Manager against down-and-out (Hugh Jackman) looking for a good ' bot to get back in the game, and get back out of the debt. The heart is more interesting by the arrival of this 11-year-old son (Dakota Goyo), who has not seen his father in years but now needs taking care of. There's something endearing about how nobody ever pause to comment on the fact that they are in the presence of the giant robot remote-controlled prizefighting; It was taken for granted in the universe this cockeyed. Loosely inspired by Richard Matheson wrote an episode of The Twilight Zone, Shawn Levy films lavishly mounted and fairly silly--though in this case, human interaction is more reasonable and formulaic than fun robot actions. Jackman played for the power of roguish, Evangeline Lilly (Lost) got the role of love interest, perfunctory outlaws and uncomplicatedly hissable, from Jackman's good ol' boy's rival (Kevin Durand) heavily accented owner (Olga Fonda, Karl Yune) the scariest robot, Zeus invincible. If you can imagine with heaps of Rocky restaged spare parts, you may be the audience to real steel. --Robert Horton
